My daughter spent a year in Honduras when she as 17/18. She came back safely, but it was a tough place to be.

I went to Honduras for my honeymoon in 2008 - it was stunning but things may have changed?

WE spent a week on the mainland but avoided Teuguicigalpa apart from flying in on first night, then went North to Copan - stunning ruins and mountains - 3 days in a safari style lodge near the coast and then a week on Roatan which has the most amazing clear blue waters.

Just thought I'dpost against the grain... I felt very safe and saw no violence but maybe cos we stuck to tourist areas.

We have had a family holiday in Costa Rica and apart from being fleeced by the traffic police (as we were warned would happen on a particular stretch of road) it was fantastic, so many different things to see. The people are very friendly and welcoming. I can't recommend it enough.

Dd went on a school trip to Honduras, a week deep in the jungle in a national park and a week diving. They spent the first and last nights in San Pedro Sula which has a very bad reputation, they were not allowed out of the hotel which had armed guards, as did their hotel on the coast where they were diving. She would choose Costa Rica every time.
