Motorhome rental USA - any recommendations or tips?

We are looking at renting a motorhome to travel out from Chicago up into the Great Lakes this summer. We have rented campers before in Australia/NZ but not in the US. Does anyone have any experience of doing this type of holiday & have any recommendations for good companies to use or any tips for this type of holiday?

Also is it best to pre book the sites beforehand?

we haven't rented in USA. however we saw lots of motorhomes in Canada and my tips would be the same. Make sure that you can drive the motorhome to the attractions/things you want to visit. some of the roads and parking for attractions in Canada couldn't take motorhomes leaving people with long walks from where they could park. It will be the same in the USA. second, make sure that you have prebooked places to stay if going in the busy season. we saw and spoke to a lot of motorhomers driving around trying to find somewhere to stay when all the sites were booked. they were not americans because the americans knew about this and had pre-booked everything. hope this makes sense and helps.
