DH and I are going for a rare child free weekend. Apart from industrial quantities of -sex- sleep, what should we be doing? Any fancy restaurant recommendations?

Shamelessly bumping this in case anyone has any advice, particularly nice restaurants...?

I've never been but I do recommend the film 'In Bruges' which is really fucking funny and should definitely be watched before going there Grin

elportodelgato · 26/01/2015 19:44

Haha! Thanks Laurie, I have seen the film, probably our trip will be less bloody Grin

Umm do everything!

Walk loads. Go up the tower, boat trip ( might be chilly) thr nunnery with the lake, everything. And the museums - get a stool when you gaze at the art to stop your feet dying. Eat chips and Mayo in the square etc etc

jimsdoll · 26/01/2015 19:56

Go for a trip on d canal (wrap up twice as much as u think u will need) freezing. Eat lots of d yummy chocolate. We watched film in bruges (when we were in bruges) stayed in an apartment and drank wine for an afternoon and watched it. Thought d tower was a waste of time but they were doing work on it at d time

There's a former hospital which has some amazing works of Flemish art in it - I can recommend if you're at all into art. Its called Sint-Janshospitaal

The film In Bruges was being filmed when we went with DS2 about 9 or 10 years ago.
We thought it was a bit weird walking from our hotel to see Christmas trees all lit up outside shops in February.
Saw the big film equipment lorries parked up & lighting gantries in various places.
The bridges had dustings of fake snow.
We watched a scene being shot at about 10pm next to the tower. Made our trip a bit more interesting.
We went on a boat trip.
We went to the hospital museum & had a nice lunch there.
We got a map from our hotel & did one of the walking tours on the map.
It is a lovely place.

Have a beer in a little bar called De Gaare. The house brew is best. All beers served with chunks of cheese!

Buy chocolate at The Chocolate Line.

Go out to the city walls and see the windmills.

Cycle or take a boat out to Damme, a small village nearby.

Buy frites from the stalls in the main place.

Op, v jealous.

Right, for incredible beer 'T Bruges Beertje Kemelstraat. Fact: 12% beer is good. Happy until you cry good.

Food, Sans Cravat. Made me weep couldn't finish the food. It was soooooo good!

Cocktails, Groot Vlaenderen.

Chance of life changing friendship starter= Comptoir des Vins where Columbo is the host. Incredible evening with the most surreal company.

Bar des amis was surprisingly not very friendly.

And of course, the horse ride, frites and waffle from the market square.

SOOOOO JEALOUS! Have a fantastic time!

MorrisZapp · 11/03/2015 08:22

Oh Bruges is fab. Don't forget to visit Hema, it's like a continental cross between Woolies and Ikea.

I regretted going up the Belfry, it's really claustrophobic the higher you go, and too windy at the top to enjoy.

scratchandsniff · 11/03/2015 08:24

Its the kind of place where you don't need to do a lot iykwim. The architecture is beautiful, I enjoyed walking around and taking it all in. Sit in the square and people watch. Go get a waffle, chips and mayo, a Belgian beer etc and sit and take it all in. I would recommend the boat trip.

be prepared to part with your hard earned cash, its very expensive. A glass of coke in the square cost about £5 and that was nearly 4 years ago.

Kruidvat - a bit like Superdrug but with unusual bargains - is also worth a visit.

inamaymaybewrong · 11/03/2015 11:12

Dinner at Tom's Diner is also recommended.

thenextday · 11/03/2015 11:13

Good restaurant The Olive Tree run by Stavros from Lesbos Grin
Dali exhibition is good.
We did horse and carriage on last afternoon which was lovely.
Really was a nice place..stayed in Dukes Palace Hotel. There is a lovely lingerie shop opposite....

Honeypot1 · 11/03/2015 15:54

Next day, I think our definitions of naughty & nice might be mixed Wink

I loved the signs for the DHs!

Op, definitely worth a visit seeing as you're child free!!!

LittleMissRayofHope · 11/03/2015 16:03

I LOVE bruge. Been twice but not so great on names of places.

Def see the windmills.
Walk loads - bruge isn't big but it is beautiful.
Go up the tower. (Pace yourself)
Eat waffles
Eat fries - visit the fries museum
Visit chocolate museum
Eat chocolate

I went the second time to see the Salvador Dali exhibition at the museum on the main square. Was excellent!

There's so much to do but at the same time everything there is small so you can do lots by simply wondering around and stumbling upon things.

Look out for shops with sample trays outside. We are so much free chocolate!! Haha

I am jealous now Sad

thenextday · 12/03/2015 07:52

Found a sex shop by the canal too. Wink

MorrisZapp · 13/03/2015 09:51

Yes it's eye wateringly expensive. The restaurants seem to all keep to set prices, ie 30 euro for mussels and chips. Don't waste time and energy seeking a bargain, I don't think there are any really, for restaurants in the evening.

inamaymaybewrong · 16/03/2015 22:55

Cafe De Republiek is a big pub with good food at reasonable prices. A bit studenty and rustic but if that doesn't bother you - it doesn't me - then go for it!

LadyBlaBlah · 16/03/2015 23:10

I went last year but due to also having industrial quantities of both sex and beer, I can't remember much other than it is immensely lovely.

Think it had bridges.

WombatStewForTea · 03/05/2015 10:02

Half moon brewery tour! Even I found it interesting and the bar where you get your free beer at the end was lovely.

Pointlessfan · 03/05/2015 10:04

I loved Bruges when we went. Drink lots of amazing beer and eat plenty of chocolate!
