It's a place called Tobermory in Scotland.

ledodgywizardrobespierre · 15/10/2006 12:50

You can vsit it but have to get a boat to the island, the coloured houses are there and there are balamory souvenirs you can buy.

LaylaandSethsmum · 15/10/2006 12:50

Its Tobermory on Isle of Mull

aDadOnMumsnet · 15/10/2006 12:50

It's the Isle of Mull isn't it?

covenoveneer · 15/10/2006 12:51

It is filmed onthe island of Mull (off the NW coast ofScotland. Some of it is filmed in studios on the "mainland" but theoutside shouts are in the village of Tobermory. It is a lovely place, we have a friand who has a house there and we often go and stay. Never seen them filmimg though.

The Isle of Mull is an absolutely fantastic place: Balamory/Tobermory is IMO the least interesting part of it. We spent a week on Mull this summer and are going back again next year. DS2 wrote a poem at school this week, and he was still musing about the wonders of Mull - several weeks on. In just a week we saw: red deer, roe deer, sea eagles, golden eagles, otters, common seals, grey seals, buzzards, harbour porpoises, (no whales or dolphins though they are a common sighting), plus loads of fabulous sea birds.

thanks everyone..!! I have just this minute googled it and found out that you are all correct..!

Is it quite remote and isolated..?

I apologise for the dire spelling and spacing in that last post, no idea how that happened.

roisinpronouncedROSHEEN · 15/10/2006 13:00

It's remote and isolated compared with, say, Glasgow.
But it's not remote and isolated compared with Harris or Muck or something.
There are 3 different ferry crossings you can use (depending on how far you want to drive), and they take between 15 and 45 mins for the journey I think.

shhhh · 16/10/2006 16:18

thanks. Mmmm me thinks another holiday coming on..!! xx

Its worth a trip before no 2 arrives, seals and dear r amazin. Take wet weather gear and thermals, lots of walking to be done. We rented a lovely house there a few years ago was a really nice holiday away from rest of world!

twinsetandpearls · 21/10/2006 20:22

WE took dd to Tobermory for the day last year and she loved it, still talks about it now. There is a very friendly children's farm there as well.

As roisin said the Isle of Mull itslef is lovely, you can have all the tobermory stuff done in under an hour.

Skribble · 21/10/2006 22:25

TBH I am not that shocked about baby changing in Tobermory, it is just a small island village not a film set or a theme park. I went years ago for a couple of holidays before Balamory was created, we stayed at the Youth Hostel.

After having a look I think The Chocolate Factory would be on my list to see. Along with The Childrens farm .

It's lovely - an easy ferry trip from Oban, which is an hour or two north of Glasgow by train.

Gorgeously beautiful area.
