Hotel in Durham recommendation needed please!

This is probably a pie in the sky wish anyway - I want to take dp away for a weekend to Durham - I went about 20 years ago and loved it but haven't been since.

So it doesn't have to be child-friendly! But not tooooo expensive!

If money was no object then I would recommend Lumley castle (sorry cant do links).. its about £100 a night, they do have deals on their website. Its a little way out of Durham, about 10 minutes in the car. Beamish Hall is also about the same distance and is very nice, country type hotel. For Durham the County Hotel is supposed to be very nice, although I havent stayed there as I only lived 10 minutes down the road. HTH

We stayed at the Royal County recently and it was lovely, including a meal in the restaurant (was a long service award from work). I was a student in Durham so it was nice to return. And the big plus about the Royal County is that it is sooo central.
