Playa car/ Cancun recommendations for February 2015

I am planning a special holiday for February half term. Ideally we want somewhere within reasonable distance of Chicken Itza, Xel Har and want to avoid Cancun if possible. We have a reasonable budget but are not too bothered about luxury hotels?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Sensatori Mexico - between PdC and Cancun

If not the hotel at Xcaret is meant to be amazing

Geeklove - bit of an off the wall reply but we are going to Belize! Had looked at Cancun but looks so built up and Costa del.. that we decided it wasn't really for us. flights are reasonable and there are loads of Mayan ruins to explore plus the cayes with the 2nd largest coral reef. Pm me if you want some details about our trip.

Xcarat has a fake beach that is small.
Have a look at riviera maya, it's more for families.

Definitely Playacar, it's got a great beach, wide range of hotels and is walking distance or a £3 taxi ride to Playa Del Carmen. Lots of resorts or more remote but transport (collectivos and Ado buses are cheap). I prefer being near town and Fifth Ave, lots to do for all ages.

Deffo hit up the Riveria Maya. Some great deals there and family friendly, plus well located for some great tours.

We did the Riu Tequila in 2012, but any of the 6 Riu hotels in the area would be great

We went to riviera maya this year. We didn't go to chicken itza but we did go to xel ha. We had a fantastic holiday, Mayan ruins, snorkelling with sea turtles, fab beaches, jungle. Kids loved it. We were about 1.5 hours south of cancun so didn't go there. Xcaret does have a small fake beach but is handy for xcaret park, didn't visit the hotel or the park so can't comment further.

We stayed in Tulum last year. It's amazing. Didn't do Chichen Itza, but did see Coba which blew us away - also the cenotes and snorkelling with the turtles are incredible. Loved the area, one of the best holidays we've ever had. Have a great time!
