Is there also a way to save loads on long haul flights by going via a EU country to save on expensive UK tax?

Have a look at flying out of Amsterdam or Dublin.

The flights were significantly cheaper when i was lookig for flights to India recently.

This may not be helpful if business class is out of your budget but you can make massive savings on long haul business class flights by flying from destinations where there is very little market for a business class on that route.

Even adding in the trip to the foreign city still reduces it massively. I haven't done this recently but Cairo used to be great for this.

Be careful about what airline you use. DD used TAP recently to the USA. Flight delayed by 10 hours after being stuck in Lisbon. Always use an airline with loads of daily flights to your destination, so if there is a problem, they can find another plane. If it is too cheap, it is probably a crap airline. Sometimes you just have to accept paying a bit more.

Also, booking early is the best tip!
