Car sharing - does anyone do this?

Was chatting to a friend and we had a notion that we should investigate car sharing. We do v low mileage on ours with one or two major trips a year. On my work days the car sits in the car park all day unused.

Has anyone attmpted this? I know it would take a lot of planning and practcal changes in our lifestyle and might actually be more trouble than it is worth.

But on the other hand........who knows?

It sounds like a good idea, it would definitely save a lot of money and be ecologically friendly. I haven't done this, but my guess would be that you would have to consider the following points

  1. Would there be a problem with insurance if there are a lot of people using the car (eg if there are 2 couples that's at least 4 people).
  1. How would you work out petrol costs? Would you have to set some ground rules eg never return the car with less than a quarter tank.
  1. What would you do if you both need the car at the same time? Perhaps you could join something like Streetcar for the times when you need an extra car.
  1. Do you have regular activities that require a car would clash with your friend
  1. Will you be able have child car seats that both families can use or will both families have to fit and remove seats every time they use the car?
  1. Where will the car be parked?
  1. Who will actually own the car (I think you can only have one registered owner)? And if you decide to dissolve the share how will you settle up financially?
