I wondered how much it cost as the website doesn't show any info yet

I am debating this or ferry to Bilbao but then you end up so far from where I want to be.

My friends did it this summer - was about £600 to south of France from Calais. Recommended it though.

return or single do you know?

hmm, not sure but think it was return. Don't quote me!

friends did it this summer and had a nightmare - thieves on train went though each carriage robbing passengers at knifepoint. sod all staff on french trains - just a few students apparently. they decided to scarp the return ticket and drove all the way home from the cote d'azur .

they told me it was a lot of money - imagine more than kbear says here, but am unsure. tgv website would be where i'd start. goes to avignon or montpellier iirc.

wow how awful

Yes I had seen that page but they have no prices yet

Maybe I will drive! Or stick to the ferry option

oh are you going to the langued'oc by any chance? i really fancy going there next summer but was put off by the journey...

Tutter · 27/09/2006 17:15

we went to the south of france this year and decided the flight + car hire would be the least stressful of all options. flew southampton to avignon, which may sound a bizarre choice, but only 1hr to get to the airport and no queues at check-in as it's such a small airport. cheap flight with flybe.

CountessDracula · 27/09/2006 17:20

yes we usually do that but it restricts the amount of wine we can bring back

I really wanted to buy a VW campervan this year and take 3 weeks and do a mix of camping and renting a villa with pool for a week in the middle, lots of wine tasting and buying etc

if dd (think you have a dd) is good in the car maybe you could think about pottering down over 3-4 days. otherwise, the ferry could be a good option. no idea about cost though - would be interested to kow if you find out.

Poitou-Charente not as far as Languedoc I know, but a friend and I got the overnight ferry Portsmouth-Caen and were S of Poitiers by lunchtime (IIRC, was a while ago )

Plus I priced Motorail years ago for S of France and it was c £600 each way - can't imagine it's gone down since then.
