Any good sites to find secluded houses in New England area next to a lake....

When I was at uni (20 years ago) and fuelled by a desire to visit the area due to reading too many Stephen King novels and others set there, I dreamt of family holidays by a lake in the New England. You know, a house alone on a lake (or with one the other side of the lake) with a jetty going out into the lake to swim from. I found a company that advertised houses like these and got the brochure for a few years. Then I moved around the world, life got in the way and I petty much forgot about it.

Now my ds is 5 and I am thinking it would be a fab holiday for a few years time. But I can't remember and can't seem to find by googling any sites like this. Obviously the one I got the brochure from 20 years ago may not still be in operation but I wondered if anyone could recommend any sites please?

I can't afford $$$ but want seclusion, to a certain extent, and to be close to lovely little towns.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Somewhat unbelievably I can help - albeit by proxy. Family members recently went to this area in New Hampshire (will that do?); they stayed in a friend's house but had a whale of a time with a pre-schooler, doing exactly what you describe.

So I looked up what you can rent in the area and found this.

that's all I'll tell you because it's all I know, but perhaps it is a start. Airport was Boston Logan and it is about 100 miles, nothing by American standards.

one BIG warning- mosquito central!

Oh no, Mosquitos! They aren't in my day dreams...

Thanks, that is just the kind of thing I wanted. I assume there must be agencies with these kinds of houses? Anyone else?

And really, are mozzies a real problem ALL summer? Guessing it would be if I want to stay beside a lake :(
