Anyone know of good local art galleries and museums? Our guide gives minimal information and the ones in the gîte are 20 years old (!)

St Malo has the large aquarium. I'm sure I can think of some more - I'll be back :)

MassaAttack · 26/08/2014 16:08

Scriptorial (sp) in Avranches

bigTillyMint · 26/08/2014 16:37

Auriga! Have you thought of doing the Bayeux tapestry? The war beaches? There is a nice zoo in Lisieux (and an indoor pool with slides IIRC)

bigTillyMint · 26/08/2014 16:41

Is Honfleur too far?

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 26/08/2014 16:53

"Le mont st michel" has the abbaye
St malo as the aquarium and some maritime museums. st malo

Granville has 3 museum (no sure how good they are) Christian Dior museum, art at Anachreon and haute ville (local history) plus a lot of local artist in the old town/small galeries. more here plus a really creepy aquarium with walls of shells art (no where else in the world!) Wink

bigTillyMint · 26/08/2014 17:00

Oh yes, how could I forget le mont!

MassaAttack · 26/08/2014 17:08

Granville is lovely :)

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 26/08/2014 17:17

or if you want to push it to a bigger city Rennes is quite active and must have a lot including a fine art museum musee des beaux arts

MassaAttack · 26/08/2014 22:22

A boat trip at Dinan?

Rennes is ace - and quite quick to get to on the autoroute. The car museum at Lohéac is near Rennes, and is also fab (if you like cars - which I do!).

Auriga · 27/08/2014 21:19

Thanks v. much for these - we're managing to have a lovely time. Will go to see Bayeaux tapestry on way back. Had a wonderful day at Mont St Michel. Like the look of the Musée de Beaux Arts, thanks.

Scriptorial at Avranches is also on list for tomorrow, looks fascinating

Glad you like the Mont it is one of my favourite places.
It is a very nice region!
Massa, I agree Granville is nice but I am biased!
Around Avranches there is Ducey which is cute, great if you like salmon fishing, used to have an excellent restaurant not sure if you can visit the duke's house or not! In Avranches you can go on top of the old fort to have a view of the fields and town, also has a nice garden with a fantastic view of the mont st michel. It is deep country though most things closed for lunch (not restaurant but shops and museum).
And an eco museum is not very far and there use to be a WWII museum somewhere around.

Auriga · 28/08/2014 19:58

The Scriptorial was amazing and we were astonished to discover, when we emerged, that we'd spent two and a half hours in there.

Went to a beach on the way up the coast towards Granville & found a crowd gathered to watch the end of an international horse race.

You're right about closing for lunch (two hours) and a great many places are closed altogether. Certainly no pandering to tourists round here Grin

Oh, glad you like Scriptorial :)

The market at Avranches, on Saturday mornings, is good too.

My favourite beach in the area is Carolles - there's excellent rock pooling there.

MassaAttack · 28/08/2014 23:21

Is it the equine olympics this year?

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 29/08/2014 06:38

Carolles and la Valee du Lude is great but not really for rainy days, might be a bit slippery.

Must have been Kairon plage!

Massa yes, until 7of sept! How come you are so knowledgeable? do I know yo?

MassaAttack · 29/08/2014 06:51

We go there most years, family have a home near Avranches :)

We've not managed to get away this year and I miss it!

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 29/08/2014 07:16

Family around there...
I miss it too!
Avranches not so much though every time I go there is because of serious health problems for someone!

MassaAttack · 29/08/2014 12:38

Have you ever been to the nuit des soudours at Granville, LeMousquetaire? It's really interesting :)

MassaAttack · 29/08/2014 12:39

soudeurs!!!! My French isn't terribly good Grin

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 29/08/2014 12:47

I haven't been at "La nuit des soudeurs" but seen the rehearsal/preparation. I had baby brain last time I went the night was too late Blush, not sure about leaving the "baby" with my elderly father either!
