Yes, and yes.

Take plenty of insect repellent, plug in burners and antihistamine. DD and I were fine because mosquitoes don't like us, but OH is a mosquito magnet and always has a reaction to mosquito bites, and on holiday in May he got bitten on his ear. The bite turned nasty and continued to weep for a couple of weeks afterwards.

been twice and no-one in my family has been affected. Going again next week

It entirely depends on whether you are attractive to them Iam. DD and I didn't get bitten, but OH did because mosquitos always bite him unless he covers every millimetre of bare skin in insect repellent.

We've just come back from Crete (Agia Marina) and hardly got bitten at all - maybe one or two bites each. Dd and I normally get bitten to death! We stayed in an area with no river/lakes though, so I reckon they didn't have anywhere to breed!

Thanks all - so helpful . Thanks

There wasn't a river or a lake where we stayed. Unfortunately if you are a mosquito magnet, like OH they will find you. And if you aren't, like me, they will leave you alone.
