What is the best campsite in France?

Hi
Help needed for holiday next year. I've been looking at all the campsites and they all look so good (but don't they always on the adverts). Have been to Frejus, Royan and La Mole (near Port Grimaud). I'm currently looking at La Sirene campsite in Argeles, and the reviews I've read have been fab - except for one, which was quite negative and felt the campsite was overcrowded, and the weather was very windy - I must admit it has put me off it a bit. So, please mumsnetters, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Oh yes, forgot to add. The kids (aged 8 and 5) love the pool, especially a pool with waterslides, so the site does not necessary have to be near the sea. Thanks

Hi Clangers - are you looking for a super-duper five star campsite? If you're not and want somewhere amazing but it is roughing it a bit then look no further than Omaha Beach campsite in Normandy. Amazing, but not for those in want of luxury!!

Sophiev73 · 16/09/2006 12:54

ah just read your update. Scratch my suggestion - not for you then!!

theclangers · 16/09/2006 12:59

Thanks for that Sophiev73. I must admit, we do like an teeny bit of luxury (toilet and shower luxury), and we stay in the mobile homes (don't do tents).

The beach at Argeles is known to be windy even in the summer. I remember going as a child, and it was really windy in July. Great campsite though, although yes HUGE.

I reckon you can find what you are after in any area of France, so maybe you need to decide where you want to be... West coast, south coast, Brittany. That will narrow it down a bit.

theclangers · 16/09/2006 16:37

I was looking at the Languedoc and Rousillion region hence La Sirene, however, we would consider not such a mammoth drive if the campsite was good enough with a fab pool, and look at central France (Massif Central/Burgundy) - I'm open to suggestions.

we love this site in the vendee

And have now been there twice. Once in a rented van, and this year in our own tent. We have already booked for next year.

The site is noce and small, has excellent facilities and is great for families with iyounger children as it isn't too manic. It is 15 mins from the beach. I have written a full revie for UKcampsite.co.uk

theclangers · 16/09/2006 16:51

Thanks for that Martianbishop, but is it just a camping campsite, as we would be looking at staying in a static mobile.

My heart will always lie in the Ardeche/Tarn/ Cevennes area. These areas are stunning and wild, and have plenty of canoing and river swimming to do.

Canvas Holidays have some sites there, but I know for a fact that the sites are not as big and impressive as coastal ones (I used to work for canvas in that area) - but still all have pools.

Canvas in ardeche, tarn, cevennes

Sorry may not suit!

We have just had a fab 2 weeks at La Sirene - many many recommendations on here & other boards persuaded us.

For evening entertainment we saw Cats, Lion King (fully costumed), Grease, Blues Brothers & more. Couldn't believe it!. Free bus to beach (1 mile away). Little train (4 Euros return) takes you to beach, town, all campsites etc so can eat out &get train back. On-site take-away the best we have come across. Included usual pizzas etc but also lasagne, paella, ribs, curry etc. The restaurant was also v.good & huge onsite shop very well stocked.

Would glady go back.

we 've been here and had a great time

Hi there,
We are confirmed fans of La Sirene. It is a large site but it's really well laid out & we have never found it to be too crowded or noisy. The opposite in fact, they have regular security patrols by night to make sure there are no loud parties etc.. going on. Great reassurance when you have young kids who need their sleep ! The area can get windy but this is a welcome releif in the heat of the summer and usually only lasts for a few days at a time. If you were interested in private rentals on that site have a look at www.frenchmobilehomes.com . Booking direct with an owner or with the campsite will save you a LOT of money. I would say that it is definitely worth the drive down, loads of people do it. We have been there approx 9 times now & have booked for next summer already. There's loads to do & even after all this time we still find new sights to see.

cailin2 · 19/09/2006 21:35

have a look at this website about accomodation in La Sirene.

We went to Yelloh village Les Petits Camarguais this year. We flew in and hired a car and it would be a huge drive if you decided to take your own car! The kids loooooooved it! Pool with waterslides, kids clubs where the reps speak about 5 languages, entertainment nightly which the kids loved (and made us buy the CD so we still have to listen to it at home![weary emoticon] table tennis, organised sports for the kids, boules etc.
And the mobile home had a dishwasher! (COTTAGE 6-8 PERSONS) unfortunately dh got eaten by mosquitoes as they love him so if you are that way inclined could be a bit of a problem, especially if it does happen to rain.

calpopscalum · 20/09/2006 18:31

I can recommend 2 in Brittany and the Vendee - been to others but these two ar FAB!!!

If yopu love the pool you have to try Camping Mane Guernehue in Baden, Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany - wpnderful, best site I've ever been on and the pool complex is amazing!

This year we went to Camping Acapulco in St jean de Monts which was great - not as fantastic as Baden in some ways but we emjoyed our holiday just as much. The pool complex isn't as good as Baden but the kids loved the slides just as much!

next year we 're going to Les 2 Fontaines in Raguenes Brittany which looks crap in the French Life brochure but amazing in the photos in it's own brochure and web page. Just say if you want more details on any of these! No point typing loads if you wanna go south!
