Can anyone please recommend the best way to travel door to door to Birmingham University (nearest train station "Birmingham University", postcode B15 2NQ) on public transport from any of the following UK airports: Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Liverpool, Manchester or Stansted?

Many thanks.

Try a journey planning website eg train line.com for details but it is really easy. You can also use coaches of course and the would probably be less changes (there mYbe an airport coach ) .

Or fly into Birmingham airport thrn it is a single train journey to university station

Remember that university stationis still 10-15 mins walk from studen accom so you msny want a taxi if lots of luggage.

I would get a train to Birmingham New Street and then get a taxi. The university buildings are easy to get to and are in the city itself.

Can you not fly into Birmingham? Otherwise get the train toBirmingham New Street and then a train from New Street to University (about every ten minutes at peak times and about ten minutes' journey).

Panda - the university campus is not in the city centre. It's in Selly Oak, in South Birmingham.

I know it is. I drive past it every month. But it's still not that far.

Agree if you can fly into Birmingham International then get the train out to University changing at New Street.

I used to get a train to New Street and then a Taxi. There may even be a welcome desk from the Uni at the station.
I have shared a taxi with a student from the US. It's not that far.
I would try to fly into Birmingham Airport if possible.

Gatwick and heathrow will both involve travelling into London and the out again. From what I remember Manchester could be tricky with luggage too.
Do consider coach travel as it could be far more convenient as well as cheaper (and they are very luxurious nowadays).

Thank you all so much. Sadly there are no flights to Birmingham airport.

It looks like the best option will be to fly into Gatwick or Heathrow then take a coach to Birmingham directly from either of those airports.

At Birmingham it seems wisest to get off at the coach station (formerly Digbeth) and take a taxi to the accommodation even though Five Ways is the closest coach stop as that will be too far to walk with luggage and probably less easy to get a taxi as there´s a rank at the coach station.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

Also any decent - or awful - hotels near to the university?

Five ways is way too far to walk.

Where are you going? The main campus? One of the halls of residence?

Happy36 · 03/08/2014 21:53

The halls of residence called Vale Village.

My friends´ son is off there for the first time as an undergrad next month. He has never been to the UK before!
