package hol in Crete - what do we need?

Have never, ever been on a package holiday before - we have always done self-catering in UK or France, and driven. This year we are taking 2 DCs to Crete and staying in a hotel. It's not a posh one and I am braced for it to be a bit 18-30, but I just wanted some guaranteed sunshine, a pool, a beach nearby and to not have to think about shopping for or preparing meals! But I have no idea what to pack. It will be hot, so I am thinking mostly T shirts and shorts for DSs, with sandals and one jumper each in case of need, plus of course swimwear. Would they need trainers? beach shoes? Anything else I may have overlooked? And what about me ? What on earth does a 40 something mother wear on holiday in Crete????

er...don't AIs provide towels and beach towels? And drying hair in Greece in the summer is a matter of going outside for 10 mins.

We had a fab week in Crete at the end of May. We took swimwear, beach towels (the hotel provided towels for the pool, but not for the beach), shorts, T-shirts/vest tops. I took a couple of maxi dresses for the evening, and OH took shirts and trousers for the evening - not because we are posh, but he needs to cover up because of the mosquitoes.

Which reminds me - take plenty of insect repellent and one of those plug in insect repellents that you can put in your room. Mosquitoes are a pest in Crete.

You will also need plenty of sun cream, sunglasses of course and perhaps sunhats. If you do the Samaria Gorge walk you will need sensible footwear. We found that we needed our cagoules one afternoon as well.

It might not be 18 - 30ish unless you are going to Malia. where are you going?

Bobbles for long hair, books, cards, yahtzee, hats, sun cream - not sure you are going to need jumpers lol beach shoes are good or crocs - have a fab time xx

You don't need rain coats.

I take a wrap or a cardi in case there's a breeze in the evening when we go out for a meal but I honestly don't think you'll need it much.

Trainers, shirts t shirts, flip flops for DCs, I wear day dresses or t-shirt and skirt with flip flops.

Def get a plug in mosquito repellent.

It won't be 18-30s unless you're going to Malia!

We've just come back from Crete...it was very hot, even at night (30C+ in the day, 20 something at night). We were basically in swim wear all day and shorts/vest tops/t-shirts for the evenings. No one really dressed up where we were staying and I felt a bit over-dressed when I wore my maxi-dress out one night!

Take some sort of flip flops/crocs for the beach/pool as the sand and tiles were scorching hot. Take hats for the kids, plus an old t-shirt to wear in the pool to cover their shoulders (or one of these sun-suits if they are young). We used factor 50 all holiday as the sun was really strong.

Where are you staying?
