Child carriers - any advice from those who have them?

We're about to buy a child carrier for a six month old but want it to last a fair time, we go walking in the Lakes, but mostly it will probably be used for relatively short walks on beach with the dogs. As we do this most days, it has to be sturdy and robust and MOST IMPORTANTLY good at keeping out the rain, as it seems to do nothing else in the north these days, drought notwithstanding!

Any advice much appreciated...

Go to a shop that has a good selection and try them on with your baby in it and walk round for a bit in the shop.
We got ours from a shop selling outdoor and camping stuff that for a £10 charge we could borrow one for the day and if we bought one we got the £10 back - if not we lost the money. - We did this and as a result were very happy with outs - it was a Macpack by the way

If you have enough time see if you can go to an NCT sale. We got our Bush baby one there for £25.00 and its fab. There were two or three at the last one I was at so you could save yourself a lot of money.
