We can't go away this summer or in the October half term, so am fixating on our week away at New Year... We would like to go somewhere warmish, pretty, with lovely food, and child friendly for dd (4). Am thinking along the lines of Sicily, Lisbon or a Greek Island... All suggestions gratefully received, thank you.

probably not a greek island!

if you want warm short haul from the UK it is really the Canaries.

I do like Lisbon and it has a lot of character, not sure if I'd call it 'pretty'. Food is great though!

Thanks specialsubject - why not a Greek island?

Because it's still in the northern hemisphere....

We've spent 3 New Years in malta- one year it rained a bit, but we always came home lightly tanned and rested, lots to see and sea swimming, foods a bit unexciting.
It's the cheapest place to go at new year too.

More constructively, northern Tenerife is incredibly beautiful and unspoilt, a friend grew up there, in La Laguna. So different from the south of the island. Delicious food.

Sharm El-Sheikh.

Would you consider a cruise around the canaries and possibly Madeira?
There's loads to do on board and much more likely to be warmer than the places you mentioned.
Cruises are very child friendly my DC love them.

Thanks for all the ideas so far, really helpful. I'd always assumed that the Canaries were all about the sun, and didn't have much to offer looks wise or food wise, but it sounds as if I was just being prejudiced, so I will investigate La Laguna and Porto Santo. And Madeira is an interesting idea... And thanks for the weather link re Greece... I would like some sunshine, don't mind if it's not that hot, but would definitely like to escape the rain... Thanks again all of you.
