Are you thinking beach, lakes, countryside, city, islands or mountains? What type of things do you like doing?

Rosa · 26/07/2014 13:32

Resort, beach, city, public transport or car hire ????

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 26/07/2014 13:33

Lake Garda? Depends totally on what you are looking for!

Kundry · 26/07/2014 13:42

What do you and the kids want to do? At that age I'd have been happy going round art galleries all day but I was a slightly very odd child Grin

We need more information!

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 26/07/2014 13:47

My DC at that age enjoyed Pompeii, Pisa and Mount Etna and the food!

Milan? Then you could always go to Lake Como for a day trip.

Bologna? It's a good base for exploring. You can get to Venice, Rome and Modena by train. iirc the latter has the Ferrari factory and museum which might go down well if your dcs like cars.

Personally I'd always choose Venice but you either love or hate it so you're probably best opting for somewhere less divisive.

Sorrento and go to Pompeii would be my choice. I've wanted to do it for years.

Opps sorry that really was a bit vague of me. We are quite easy really but in a perfect world would have a beach we can walk or drive to. Also the kids seem to like to have a day out doing things then a day lazing at pool or beach.

We ideally need to fly from Gatwick or Luton if this helps.

Also easy re food but probably self catering as gives us more space and choice.

Thanks for all replies so far, off to look them up.

If the dcs like days lazing at the beach or pool then you could base yourself at Lake Como. You can have day trips to Milan (magnificent cathedral, amazing shopping and La Scala). You can also have a day trip to Switzerland from Lake Como (although it's best to book train tickets in advance as the queues are very long during summer).

Or you could base yourself around Livorno (it's quite a busy port) with day trips to Pisa, Florence and Bologna.

Or stay in Venice and have day trips to Modena, Verona.

I'm so jealous. I love Italy Envy

Also, there are amazing self-catering apartments in most of the major cities. You rent direct from the owners and they are fab - high ceilings, airy rooms, marble floors, etc.

Rosa · 26/07/2014 14:58

What about sardinia ? Great self catering options lots near beaches.
Sicily with a bit more 'historic options and days out'. i wouldn't base in Venice if you want a beach as from the Lido it takes ages to get anywhere ( plus apart from today its hot and humid and IMO not much fun!
Viageggio, or le marche lovely beaches down there Sirolo and Numana.

ihatethecold · 26/07/2014 15:00

we found the beaches on the Adriatic side to be much nicer, especially near the top of Italy, we stayed in Caorle about an hour from Venice.

Although i don't think that you can beat Rome. its amazing

Lake Garda. It is DD's favourite destination. We went when she was 11 and again when she was 13.

We alternated days by the pool with days out taking the ferry to different towns round the lake.

Thanks this is all so helpful, off to take a look now
