we are due to have a weekend in the Lakes without the kids and are looking for a really nice hotel with a good restaurant or near some nice ones, so could really do with some recommendations!

Miller Howe in Windermere...Sharrow Bay in Ullswater...Michael's Nook, Grasmere. All quite pricy but very nice! Sharrow Bay has the prettiest setting IMO but is more isolated than the other two.

Crooklans Hotel Nr Kendal has a gorgeous restraunt called the hayloft. It is out in the sticks though, not close to the town

Sharrow bay is without question the best; food is breathtaking as is view. Ask for lake view room and table. If you dont stay their, book for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. Now chain owned but somehow seems better for it? McCartney proposed their..!

Miller Howe is quite theatrical, dimmed lights when food arrives, lots of fruit with meat, great outlook, OTT furniture etc, imo gone off a bit since John Tevey left.

Consider The Pheasant at Bassenthwaite, The Samling at Windemere - have not been but looks great, Howtown Hotel, just past Sharrow - great location near steamer pier, good value, a bit PSB tho, no kids. Brackenrigg a bit pubish but lovely view.

The Porthole at Bownesss is a fun Italian.

Cant beat Sharrow bay for views, setting and food. Quite pricey but worth every penny. You can feel quite 'young' there though!! Lovely sofas, flowers, a real treat.

Lots of other places near there to go for lunch, great walks, and Ullswater is my favourite lake.

Armathwaite Hall - great food, posh country house, gorgeous setting, pool, kids meals, zoo attached!! Really posh, and really child friendly - they do early teas, baby listening, special kids weeks with entertainment etc - and you can pretend you're in a Jane Austen film!
