Eurotunnel in August - book now or wait (passport worries)?

Hoping someone can give us some advice... have booked cottage in France for the week of the 9th August. STUPIDLY did not arrange children's passports until last week (one renewal, one first application, why why why did I wait?) and am now feeling very worried about getting them back. Cottage is now paid for and nothing I can do about that, but I'm just wondering whether to hold off booking the Eurotunnel tickets until when (or rather IF) we get the passports back.

So to get to the actual question, do the crossings get horribly booked up / horrendously expensive for weekend travel in August? Or is it ok to book the week before? I know there are no definitive answers but if anyone has had personal experience I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

We booked about two weeks before the holiday in August in 2012 when we were too late for cheap flights. Plenty left.

Why not book just a single for the trip out. It's less than £100 if you do lose out. Then book a return at a later date or even in France if you do get passports back? You have the flexibility if you have the car to select from available dates. Or Flexifares are refundable (but a bit pricy).

You still have 5 weeks to get the passports back so I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

As long as you are not set on a particular time, you will be fine. Euro tunnel runs 24/7 so you will certainly get a slot, but it might be 3am!

I would not book any further travel till you get both passports back.
