Copenhagen - Legoland

We are doing our first house swap this summer to Copenhagen for ten days. We would really like to take the three children 2,6 & 8 to Billund Legoland but are wondering whether the travel and stay there would be worth it.
Has anyone stayed in Copenhagen and visited Legoland? Did you travel by car or train? Any recommendations on self catering accomodation? Is Legoland worth a visit while in Denmark?

I took DC to LEGOLAND last year although we flew direct to Billund, so can't comment on the Copenhagen journey. It was great, if you like Lego and Legoland UK. Although it looks smaller, the rides are closer together and it was quiet when we went, so no queuing. We really enjoyed it.

There is a campsite with timber lodges just across the road, which sells packages including park tickets and breakfast if you want it. It's bookable via the Legoland.dk website. The lodges are small but comfortable with a simple kitchen.

Legoland is well worth a visit if you're in Denmark (loads better than Windsor) but you're probably better staying there as it'd be a very long day trip. There are plenty of hotels nearby as it's very close to Bilund Airport.

We travelled by car as we'd spent 2 weeks touring Denmark but my SIL flew up from Copenhagen and the cost was quite reasonable.
