I have a family holiday booked for Turkey. There will be six of us going. However, I have never travelled before so am unsure how much i should be paying for travel insurance.

I have found a particular insurance company with low excess etc for £20.52(bit specific I know Smile) is this good or are there plenty others that are cheaper that I missed??

If that's for a family it sounds pretty good. Mind you, I haven't bought travel insurance for years as I have it included in my bank account, but just had to shell out more than that for pregnancy cover for just me as we are going away in August and I am a week over the 28 weeks that my bank will cover.

bit of a 'piece of string' question as it depends on where, how many, exclusions, how long etc etc.

Europe is generally cheap for insurance, Turkey possibly a bit more but that sounds possible.

to check: cancellation limits - what you have to do if needed. What happens if someone not travelling gets ill and you have to stay? What if one kid gets ill and can't go?
medical limits - should be £1M or so. Do you have to pay and claim?
baggage cover - enough for what you are taking?
exclusions -pre-existing medicals must be declared. Usual exclusions are being drunk, being drugged, illegal behaviour, unattended valuables.

BTW with no insurance you are stuffed if you have to cancel so sort it quickly.

I do have it through my bank, but that only covers me. It seems like a fair price for a week travel, but seen as though I've never done it before I thought I would get opinions to make sure I don't get stung Smile

our bank account covers me and dh (as its a joint account) but also covers the children

bruffin · 23/06/2014 13:19

I just paid £72 for a week for 4 of us to northern cyprus. This was the cheapest i could find because i declared dh narrowed arteries and ds allergies. I had quotes as much as £150 for a week.

Double check with your bank.

We were able to add our dc on to the policy that comes with our account for free. Their names just had to be on the policy for them to be covered.

yellowrose2728 · 23/06/2014 13:48

Thank you all Smile

I will phone my bank to double check...I just think their policy is a very standard one, but I will ask them for a breakdown (assuming that can add them on).

I am with Natwest and they offer family travel insurance cover through the account and it covers you, your partner and any dependant children without having to phone to add them on.

Go on price comparison and compare. The excess is per person but so is the claim amount. I got family of four to turkey last week for £32 with virgin. There were cheaper ones but they were £100 excess which is per person so a lot!

MillyMollyMama · 23/06/2014 18:21

This quote sounds too cheap for 6 people! I thought it was per person!!!

HermioneWeasley · 23/06/2014 18:26

Agree, sounds reasonable for 6 of you, but all insurance is not the same. Excesses, treatment of pre existing conditions, medical cover, actual amounts paid out etc vary hugely

Sleepyfergus · 23/06/2014 18:31

Try Blue Bear travel insurance. It was recommended by Which? recently. I got a years family insurance for £48 for Europe. I was offered three levels, bronze, silver and gold and the diff between each was only £2-£3 so I went for the gold option

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 24/06/2014 10:18

We go to Turkey most years and we always use Insure and Go. We always get the best cover, with no excess and it costs around £60 for a family of 4 for 2 weeks. You can get it cheaper but it depends on what cover you want. I would rather have more cover and pay more.

Suttonmum1 · 24/06/2014 12:59

Please think about whether you will do any activities like cycling, windsurfing, kayaking etc and check you are covered for those. Many people will not be covered for the activities they do on holiday.
