Anyone been to Antigua?

We have an offer of cheap flights to Antigua for a week in May. We would have to find a hotel or apartment separately. Everything I have looked at so far is an all-inclusive resort and very expensive. Is this what is the norm in Antigua? Would we be able to find a nice hotel with a pool near the beach for less than an arm and a leg? Or an apartment? I've never been to the Caribbean and I just don't know the best way to do this, so any help would be much appreciated.

Can't really help on the accomodation front I'm afraid but we stayed Room Only in an all inclusive resort (St James Club). It was great as watersports were included as was the kids club and the drinks trolley people on the beach often forgot to charge us for drinks
