Day trip to Tangier from Spain

Will be staying near Gibraltar in August and DD is desperate to have a trip over to Tangier so she can visit two continents in one holiday! Grin

Has anyone done this as a day trip? Is it ok to just book ferry tickets and go or is it best to book an organised trip?

Also tips on best places to visit there would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance for all help!

Bump

Surely one of you intrepid mumsnetters has done this trip?

Please take pity on a poor nervous mummy and share your wisdom Smile

I used to do this regularly before I married. Drive down to Algerciras from Marbella and catch the Imbatuta (sp?) across to Tangier. The contrast was amazing - and I loved it. Haven't done it for many years, but funnily enough, was talking to my brother about it just today. Often saw the dolphins swimming alongside the boat. Just fabulous! If you do this, please let me know how you got on, something I'd love to do again one day! Smile

Ooh, only just realised I got a reply!

Thanks ajand for the input.

Was thinking of driving to Tarifa and going as foot passenger do you think this would be a good idea?

I am sure we will be going as DD will definitely not let me off the hook! Grin

Will make sure to update you at the end of August Smile

Two seconds ago I looked, and realised you hadn't seen it. We always parked (might have been Tarifa - can't remember!) and went as foot passengers. You can then get a cab at the other side. Can't wait to hear how you get on.

My brother always says it's a dirty hole, but I loved the atmosphere!

make sure you get your passport stamped before you come back!!!
We had a nightmare with this - went as foot passengers, I think we got passports stamped on the boat on the way over. Then on the way back did not realise we weren't going to be able to do the same and ended up running all over the port trying to find where to get it done.

I am sure you aren't as daft as we were though, and would have worked this out, though Smile

Also (and again I'm sure you're not as daft as we were) make sure you go to Tangier port and NOT Tangier Med, which is about 40km away from Tangier. Bit of a shock for us when we arrived. Be careful in Tangier as well, I found it a dirty, unpleasant, seedy place, or the old town part anyway. The New Town part is fine.
