Survival type day - Northern England

My 10 yo DS is currently very interested in Bear Grylls/ Ray Mears style survival stuff. He's desperate to learn how to light a fire, build a shelter etc. which neither me nor DH can help him with as our idea of a good time outdoors involves g&t on the patio. He does Cubs but his pack is a bit crap and never does this type of stuff.

I've seen online a few courses but most of them seem to be full weekends and therefore a bit out if reach for us price wise. Also most seem to be in the south of England or Wales and we're in Yorks.

Does anyone have any recommendations for day courses in the North of England for this type of thing?

Might be a wild goose chase but seem to recall National Trust had some scheme with park rangers (??) for under 12s?

Thanks Donkeys, that sounds more like the kind of thing I'm after. Off to investigate.

Might be too tame (agree wholeheartedly with I'm-quite-comfy-thanks-y'all-have-fun-now! approach).
