Passport application delay - what worked for us

Just returned from holiday and received our baby's passport only a few days before we were due to fly - all v stressful - so thought I would share what worked for us in case it's helpful.

  • Call the identity and passport service helpline number (the only publicly available number) to find out that your application is at least in the system and find out what stage it's at.
  • Tell them when you're travelling
  • Tell them again
  • Tell them again
  • Remember they are only a call centre with no ability to speak to any of the passport offices and it's not the fault of the person on the phone so try not to shout at them!
  • Find out where your application has been sent - Durham, Liverpool etc - it won't bear any correlation to where you live - then start googling like crazy to find the number of the passport office. The IPS people can't tell you the number of the passport office, they just say they'll ask for someone to call you.
  • Don't believe them when they say they wi call you back (the IPS that is) or that they have asked for your application to be expedited - keep calling them until you find out where your application is and have found the number for that particular passport office
  • Phone the passport office. Don't be surprised if you have to stay on hold for an hour; it's worth it
  • don't be surprised if when you get through they haven't received a request to expedite or if try have no idea when you're travelling
  • tell them again when you're travelling, beg, cry etc
  • contact your MP and ask them to intervene - tell them where your application is as this makes it much easier

I'm not sure whether it was my MP's intervention or just my repeated calls to Durham that got ours through the hold up but we got a call 3 days before our flight saying it was in the post and it arrived the next day.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Greetings Everyone !

I wonder if anyone has applied for a first British passport as an adult, and succeeded, whilst living in USA? Many thanks!

Im trying to get a renewal of my children's passport they have been with liverpool for 4 weeks even though they said we would have them back in 3 tried everything but liverpool just keep saying we should not have booked our holiday does anyone have the email address of the CEO any help will be appreciated my wife is at wits end. Liverpool must be the worst place to get your passport they wont even say why there is a delay, just keep telling us its in the system (they seem to find pleasure in our anxiety)

Ours are being processed at Durham and are super quick. My renewal was 6 days, ds1 first passport 13 days and received returned documents for dh and ds2 passport today so I imagine the passports will follow shortly. Ring them and use the track system online and hassle them constantly. Hope they arrive soon. Smile

I did my check and send on a Saturday at the post office and the new passports were back with me on Friday so less than a week later.

Smudgers, CEO email is [email protected]

I would recommend also emailing your local MP. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had less than 3 weeks to get my child's first passport. Did online application and handed in paperwork to HMPO Glasgow last Friday 13 March. I'd been given inconsistent advice by the helpline regarding the possibility of fast tracking this application so I emailed Paul Pugh and also my local MP outlining my situation and explained I need the passport by the end of March. I got a reply from my MP within hours saying that she would get her team to do anything they can. The online tracker had not shown any change in the process until this afternoon, about 24 hours after I sent the emails. The tracker now miraculously shows that the passport has been dispatched and should be with us shortly. That has only been 5 days in total, no check and send and no fast track. Not sure if this is a coincidence and that HMPO are powering through the applications at the moment but I strongly suspect this exceptionally speedy service is down to either Paul Pugh or my local MP getting involved. Either way, I am very grateful as I didn't leave the 3 weeks processing time as advised! Would highly recommend doing this if you need passport urgently and aren't getting anywhere speaking to HMPO.

My husband rang on Friday for an appointment in London and was offered Newcastle on Saturday! Rang again and offered monday lunchtime. We leave Friday at 7am. I am crapping myself that it won't be enough time and as I am working all week I won't even be home to sign for the courier. I could cry. Not had a holiday for 8 years and its sheer unorganised twatiness and thinking there was a same day service for kids as there is for adults. I don't think my MP will work...he knows I don't vote Tory....
