Please give me ideas of a great summer destination in the alps with a seven year old. My DP is a keen athlete and does not fancy a lazy beach holiday. Help

Not sure if you meant for this to be in Weekend Breaks. We go to the Alps every year and have done since DCs were 6 & 4. It rather depends on what you want to do. We go to walk, and very little else. Fortunately DD could manage 8-10 miles at 4 as long as there wasn't too much "up". Pretty much all resorts have a pool, and most an adventure park/summer toboggan or similar. Chamonix is my favourite place and we'll be going back the for the third time this year; the scenery is just breathtaking and there's walking for all levels but it probably isn't worth the cost of the lift pass unless your seven year old is happy to walk at least 5-6 miles at a time, though there are loads of other activities, eg climbing, white water rafting etc. We've had other wonderful holidays in Grindelwald and Zermatt (though Switzerland is very expensive). Austria is a bit tame for me. If you don't intend to walk, perhaps look for somewhere or an operator with more in the way of organised activities; operators from Explore to HF Holidays have family trips to the Alps. Lake Annecy or similar might also work, Avoriaz has a water park and linked Megeve has good walking. Lift prices vary a lot which might be a factor. The Inghams Chalet Hotel concept works well for families but we always self-cater (so that I can eat fondue/raclette/tartiflette every other evening!).

Was just coming on to suggest some places and I can see that angelcake has beaten me to it Grin

Some wonderful recommendations there. Theres tons to 'do' in the alps, walking, sailing, boat trips, going inside glaciers, luge, horse riding, cycling, 'go-ape' type zip wires - you will have a ball !

Thank you angel cake, I meant to post on holidays but silly me. Thank you for your suggestions, as long as there are breaks I am sure my sun can walk 7 miles. I have a stressful job and a holiday is a treat for me, I would like safe catering but will need a cleaner, I am not cleaning on holiday. I much prefer the flexibility of cooking our own food with options to eat out, amazing views with a good spa is ideal for us. Do you chamonix? My seven year old wants to swim a lot on holiday and do fun kids stuff.
