Another California question

We're visiting California in August and would like to stay somewhere around the Santa Cruz area for a few nights. It's all so expensive though and the cheaper places have terrifying reviews on TripAdvisor. DON'T STAY HERE!!! That sort of thing.

Can anyone recommend places to stay please? Either accommodation actually in Santa Cruz or other places nearby. Doesn't even have to be that near, really, just somewhere in the general vicinity and close(ish) to the beach. Is it possible to find anywhere that's less than £100 a night? We really can't pay ££££s.

Probably not in August re paying less than £100 a night as that is also peak season. What is your budget in US dollars a night?. I would try and up the budget per night if at all possible to have a better chance of finding somewhere nice.
