Boston - of course.

We stayed over the mountain from Stowe in a tiny village the other side of the wonderfully-named Smugglers Notch. Much quieter than Stowe and IMO, more beautiful. Stayed in a Best Western motel.

Can't remember the name of the village though - be back in a mo when I've googled.

Might have been Jeffersonville, or perhaps Smugglers Notch itself ( though I don't think so).

Aha, just worked it out. J'snville is Smugglers Notch too. Great place.

We stayed in a lovely b&b in Arlington near the Norman Rockwell museum (I'm not sure if it's still there though). Not costal but I really liked it, it was very atmospheric, as though it was stuck in one of those sweet Andy Rooney/Judy Garland movies. There was good outlet shopping in nearby Manchester too.

Where are travelling from? If from New York or somewhere south of New England then I really liked Mystic, even though it was extreemly touristy. There is a recreation of an 18th Century (I think) fishing village which is very well done, although probably not grittily realistic.

Good (if slightly distant now!) pre-kid memories of
The Wentworth Resort Hotel , Jackson , NH (nr North Conway and its outlet shopping !)
The Red Sleigh Inn , Lincoln NH nr Loon Mountain
The 1830 Shire Town Inn , Woodstock VT
eating at Mabel's Lobster Claw in Kennebunkport ME!

Well, being a native Vermonter, I must recommend my neck of the woods (though not coastal!) which is the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont. Lots of lovely little towns and beautiful scenery. A bit more out of the way, but that is what makes it good.

years ago dh and I drove down the coast of new england and loved it. It is a beautiful drive. Bar Harbour (a bit touristy) but nice little coastal town, then definately go to Camden, small little town in Maine but so pretty. Old orchard beach is on the way too, very tacky tourist but the kids will love it.There is Kennebuckport (summer home of george Bush and family). It is beautiful. IF you like to shop go to Kittery (great outlet shopping). Also, go to Salem Mass., where they had the witch trials. The museums of the witch trials and really facinating. I had no favorite places to stay but each little town has lots of B&B's and hotels you can find. New hampshire is beautiful too, not on the coast but has the white mountains which are spectacular. With kids, there is a place called six gun city (western theme) and santa claus village and both are really fun for them. Depends on when you are going. IF you are thinking fall, go around the oct when the leaves are changing and see the fall colours. You will love it.
