I've been but it was about 8 years ago and on the "backpacker" end of the island.

Is this your first trip to Thailand?

fairyfly · 01/09/2006 16:44

Dinosaur, we were going out to meet him but my boyfriend still wants to go. I think it will possibly be quite painful for him but he is keen to show me the place.

Rojak, yes my first trip to Thailand, my first trip out of Europe i think.

I'm honestly scared, scared of the flight, scared of insect stories, scared i will get lost, i just want someone to humanise it for me. If that makes any sense whatsoever.

The Thais are generally very friendly. It will be very warm, mosquitoes really only at dawn or dusk (good repellant will sort that out).

Ko Samui is fairly tourist-y so if you're in a resort, you will probably meet other people like yourselves there on a holiday.

Thailand is a lovely country to visit.

Is your flight a night flight - if it is, you will get onboard, have dinner, watch a movie or 2, have a kip and before long, you'll be there. (12 hours looks terribly long on paper)

I've been but also long time ago - 1991 so any info I give you would not be up to date. I think you'll love it though. I've not been to many places where people are more friendly than Thailand generally - I know there have been problems on Samui but I guarantee that the average Thai you meet will be incredibly friendly.

Koh Tao is worth the lengthy boat trip - protected waters, good diving, and can't imagine it would have become that touristy.

fairyfly · 01/09/2006 16:53

No not patronising dino, kind of thing i want to think about.

Rojak, thankyou, honestly you both make me feel better about it, for some reason i've got it into my head i'm going to a really dodgy place ( well i suppose i do have a reason to think that!)

Oh... ahem... err... nothing. No, there have been divided opinions among locals on the island about just how big the tourist industry is becoming I think, and whereas some people have capitalised on this, others have not, leading to resentment. I think a lot of the businesses are run by crime families too. There was also that high profile rape and murder.

BUT BUT BUT I'm sure that horrible crime was a one-off - they caught the two responsible didn't they. And I'm sure you will find your holiday heavenly and peaceful.

I don't know about diving on Samui, I bet you can do it. As I said, if you could duck off to Koh Tao for a day or two - it is well known for diving as it is marine reserve. Used to have to get a boat to phang-an, and then a 4 hour boat to koh tao, but i bet you can go direct in half that time now. I'm sure your bf would know about where to dive anyway.

fairyfly · 01/09/2006 17:10

Yes we think thats how our friend got killed, i didn't know it was such a renowned thing.

Bollocks.

I think its like anywhere though FF. You can check with the forgein office is it (or somewhere else) so you know what places are safe and arent safe

aDAdOnMumsnet · 01/09/2006 17:16

oh fairyfly was unaware of your friend's story. While I dont have any up to date info at all, I still say that Thai people are beautiful and friendly on the whole - you will be welcomed far more warmly than any foreign tourist coming to the uk.

Try not to worry. I imagine you'll get there and relax completely. Your bf will know where to go.

Just typed 'dive samui' into google and it came back with loads of sites.
