Turkish Lira- difficulty obtaining currency this week!

Apparently they can't be purchased outside of turkey at the min, and you need to wait to get there to buy them.
I spent a very unproductive lunch queuing at numerous bank and BDC to find this out. Various reasons cited for this, though apparently normal service should resume in the next week or so.
Not much use to me, as I go on Monday, but it's meant to be cheaper to get them there anyway.

The Turkish government are stopping people buying outside of the country at the moment as they are trying to stabilise the currency. You do get a better rate in Turkey anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about it. We only ever take a small amount of lira when we go and either exchange sterling when we get there or use the ATMs to withdraw lira.

Thanks, wasn't too concerned as my parents were there a few weeks ago so going to take their leftover currency to tide us over til we get some changed.

Was more annoyed as I visited 4 banks before the cashier in M&S knew why this was the case.

Do you know if that means you can't take TL with you when you leave?

I don't know, I'm not sure how they would know if you took some back anyway. I think a small amount would be fine if you had it left over.

When we were in Turkey 5 years ago, we could use Pounds really easily.

In fact, some of the market-type stalls could give you the price of something in a handful of currencies.
So I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

Enjoy your holiday. Grin
