Has anyone stayed somewhere good in Venice with kids? A lot of places look ultra-posh and I am worried about kids breaking some priceless antiques... On the other hand I don't want to stay somewhere too basic... Kids are 5 and 2 and we will be going for 3 nights in october. 10th wedding anniversary, We went on honeymoon but stayed on the mainland. Want to stay in Venice or maybe on the Lido this time - which is better for children? Please help, if only to stop me sitting on the internet every night until 1 in the morning!!!!!

we stayed on the lido when i went to venice in about 1986! not much help but it was great

Got this Lido hotel from babygoes2.com. Don't know if it's expensive, but must be child friendly as all hotels on this site are.
Best of luck in your hunt. I'll see what else I can find.

We stayed in an apartment right on the Grand Canal

It is very pricy but was absolutely fantastic. You are right in the middle of things, only steps away from a lovely square with cafes and restaurants and about 5 mins walk from St Marks Square.

We loved the freedom of an apartment rather than a hotel - but if it is wedding anniversary then perhaps you might prefer a hotel with babysitter? Although the apartment owner was more than happy to organise a babysitter should we want one!

We'd taken our own though - my mum came with us

this fantastic thread here

with loads of advice in particular from albertand frenchgirl really helped us. Our kids loved it. We stayed in this here \link hotel; it wasn't cheap but we reckon that not having to travel, and going back to the hotel for a drink and rest in our room really saved us money. The room was a good sized family room with the kids in 2 single beds slightly round the corner from our bed which did give us a tiny bit of privacy.

We stayed at The Excelsior on the Lido when kids were 10,8, 7 and 6months. Great location (where stars arrive for filmfestival) and kids play area etc but we were a bit disappointed with it. Quite dull and bizarre decor. There are shuttle ferries to the centre included. Also stayed at Gritti Palace which was truly fantastic - but without kids. Too many antiques around!

thank-you - the other venice thread is great - lots of ideas for things to do when we get to Venice.
I can't wait to go. I've ordered a few childrens books set in Venice to get ds1 in the mood. He's very excited by the idea of a water-city.

We did lots of the thigns on that ist. The campanile at St Giorgio is fab. Take lots of little snacks to have for the kids as the stuff there is pricey.

Get in touch with Lucia and Diego www.veniceitalianschool.com they run a gorgeous Italian school (I have just booked my eight year old in for October half term) but are also able to find lovely accommodation for families and at local rates rather than tourist rates.

They are really lovely and increadibly knowedgeable and I am sure that they will be able to help.
