Best day out in Yorkshire

We will have an 11 year old girl from a different country staying with us and we will have one day (that she's not busy) to take her out. I know loads of nice places but just hesitant which one would make the best impact for someone who's never been in the UK before?

I've been thinking of York, Skipton, Harrogate, Bolton Abbey, Harewood Estate.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

York is very 'English'. Lovely if she wants to be 'grown up' and have afternoon tea (be prepared to queue if you're going to go to Betty's). Os of little crafty type shops so she can buy something to remember her trip or for presents for people back home.

If she's a bit younger - Forbidden Corner is fab, especially on a nice day.

Very eccentric English!

Or Fountains Abbey?

I'd probably go to Bolton Abbey - you can get exercise, fresh air (I think 11 year olds still need this?!), plus good cake, plus gift shop to waste some money in?

IME children tended to be wowed by similar things they would be at home (waterparks, theme parks etc) rather than stuff adults think they ought to enjoy... Not sure which side of Yorkshire you're on, but if it's a nice day and you're In the west, it's lovely to get the ferry across Windermere then swim in the lake, play in the park etc.
Is she doing a language course? My cousin (then 14) did one in Sheffield and got sick to death of hearing about steel - we nearly took her to something I thought would be interesting locally and she said "God, more spooooooons". Bit of an adolescent eye roll etc :-)
So I'd think more about what's fun, if that makes sense?

Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. We love it.

Leeds has loads to offer. It's a great shopping centre with some beautiful arcades. Then there is Roundhay Park with tropical world, Kirkstall abbey and the Abbey House museum, and Temple Newsham.

Saltaire in Shipley
Ilkley and Otley
The Worth Valley railway and Haworth
Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall - you can't get more Yorkshire than these two places

Rooble Yorkshire is nowhere near the lake district Grin
