i have friends flying out on tues, have spoken to them today and they seem to think the no hand luggage rule is still in place, just a small handbag style to hold tickets and passports/medication baby milk and nappies

Oh so you can have a small bag, thats a start. Are things like books and pens still not allowed or is this restricted to American flights.

Mmm not sure but a friend flew to spain last week and she had colouring books and pencils for the kids! Maybe just pens? that are still banned

I think if he can take a book he will be happy, I think he can buy one once through to departures. He normally does what I do for overnighters and just carrys hand luggage. He will have to check in a virtualy empty bag with only a change of top, pants and socks plus toiletries I hope.
