Uganda - any experiences?

My exh has recently moved to Uganda & staying with Ugandan friends. He's enjoying the experience and wants our son to go out there for a visit during summer holidays. I have no experience of this country and i don't know anybody who has. Frankly it scares me! Does anybody here have any experience of travel to Uganda with a child? Is it a safe place to go?

DS is 12, will be 13 by time of holiday. Exh is based in Kampala, plans to take DS to Jinja for activity-holiday type adventures. Just for info, we are white uk-based, no connections with Africa except for friends as above.

Jinja is normally full of tourists. Lots of overland companies go there.
He would need all his jabs and anti malaria tablets.
I think the min age for white water rafting is 16 years but there are family float days he could go on, horse riding, sunset cruises, mountain biking, quad biking in the local villages is great, he can also help at the charity called softpower where you can spend the day at a local school or orphanage. softpowereducation.com/

he could also go on safari for a couple of days but he is to young for a gorilla trek.
Kampala is a mad city but has western style shopping centres with good restaurants, bowling and cinemas.
I would look at British airways as it's a direct flight.
