I am not a camper but I really want to see the Grand Canyon "properly"

I know, I should get over it. I don't mind roughing it as far as sleeping arrangements, cooking or even toilets are concerned but to be happy and comfortable I need a shower and clean hair everyday.

I really want to see the Grand Canyon but I don't want to get of a bus and look at it. I want to walk in/round it. I've seen some great tours that involve walking the trails and kayaking/rafting which I (and DC) would love, except for the fact that they all involve camping.

Is there an alternative?

Just one - the cabins at the bottom of the canyon.

you get there on foot or by mule.

Not been there although have visited the canyon - let us know if you do it, sounds amazing!

or you can stay either in the rim-edge lodges or in Flagstaff and do daywalks some of the way down. The walks along the edge are also good.

We went to the Grand Canyon and stayed in accommodation on the south rim. Were expecting it to be really crowded (high summer) but it wasn't at all. Even the restaurants had plenty of space at dinner time. There is a shuttle sightseeing bus that runs around the rim at the top, but there is also a nice path. We found that the path was quite busy around the bus stops but the parts in between the stops were deserted. Seemed most people rode around on the bus and just hopped off to take photos before hopping back on. Several paths running down into the canyon from the rim. Would recommend going, was so much better than I anticipated because much less busy than I had thought. Staying in the park on the rim saved a lot of travel time.
