Stopover on the way to Dordogne

Can anyone recommend somewhere good to stopover between Calais and dordogne region. I'm thinking either Rouen ish or a bit further on around Orleans / Loire. There will be 4 of us 2 adults and 2 children under 5 so family friendly essential. Thankyou

Because we just want somewhere to lay our heads overnight, we're trying the B&BHotel chain. Just basic no-frills hotels (like Travelodges) but with four person rooms - a double bed downstairs and two singles on a mezzanine above the en suite. It's about 65E for one of these rooms in the summer. The breakfast looks okay and very cheap compared to the UK (6E for an adult, 3E for a child under about 10). They are usually on industrial estates just outside major towns, so nothing to do nearby (except usually a Buffalo Grill diner, at which you get a discount), but you could always drive into Rouen or wherever. There's one at Alencon too, which might be the right kind of place for you, or Le Mans.

I used to stay in this kind of place en route pre kids, and always found it worked really well. I haven't tried it yet with kids - this summer will be the first time.

We stopped in a premiere classe last year in Rouen was clean and comfy.

This year we are staying in a Novotel in Rouen sud they have a pool.

It was cheap to book as well through expedia. Try booking.com, you can do a map search as well.

I have stayed at the Novotel at Rouen Sud 3 times and would recommend it. Pool is freezing - but the food is nice - Kids menu especially good for France. And kids get a free breakfast. Car park is locked up at night. Family rooms cleans and perfectly fine. Free wifi. Just down the road there is an all you can eat chinese buffet place, which was a bargain and really good selection, if you don't fancy the Novotel menu.

There are indoor and outdoor play areas too and there were always lots of other kids the times we stayed.. Crayons /colouring stuff made available at the dinner table etc.
