Due to the mildly Bridezilla-like behaviour of a very dear friend, DH and I will be stuck in the Holiday Inn on J9 of the M1 on a Saturday night, ready for my 9am bridesmaid photocall on Sunday morning.

As a consolation for two nights in a Holiday Inn and being charming to all the aged aunts I rashly promised DH a nice dinner on the Saturday night.

Doesn't need to be posh posh but must be better than pub-food and if possible better than neighbourhood-bistro.

Any ideas? Anyone local know any hidden gems? Help!

I used to live in Harpenden and so still look at any reviews I see in the papers etc.

I noticed there was good one for The Fox pub on the Luton Road. It sounded worth checking out and it's on teh right side of Harpenden for you.

The other gastro pub place is the Three Horeshoes. I noticed this one because it was the pub we used to go to as..ahem..teenagers (!) - but is now a fab eaterie apparently.

Sorry i haven't tried any myself - I now live too far away.

A friend has been to a gastro pub in Harpenden which has been taken over by Jean Chrstope Nouvelli (sp?) and that had a great time, no idea what its called though, perhaps somebody else here knows the name.

ooh, you got my hopes up with JCN at the White Horse there - DH nearly hyperventilated as he's a huge fan. But no tables .
The Fox and the Three Horseshoes both look rather nice though - any more for any more?

The restaurant that is attached to the hotel is pretty nice if you need to eat there at any other point MrsB.
I would highly recommend Nichols in Harpendon, is absolutely fab. There are some nice Bars in Harpendon too. Or there is a lovely Thai restaurant cannot think of the name of it for the life of me though.
There is the Millefiorri in Dunstable, haven't been there for a while but food was absolutely fantastic last time we went. There is the Old Palace Lodge in Dunstable which is a hotel but the food is nice and you can just walk in i think.

Will let you know if i think of any more
