N Yorks Coast - where to go for grown-up weekend?

Am arranging family outing to mark significant birthday (just grown-ups). Arty types, who would also enjoy afternoon teas in old seafront hotels, as well as bracing cliff walks etc. Any recommendations - preferably accessible by train?

Or Staithes

Or Robin Hood's Bay. Or Whitby.

There's loads of choice actually (making me a bit homesick in fact)

YY Saltburn is very nice, when I lived in Whitby (20+ yrs ago it's true) there was quite an arty scene there... you would need to check out hotels etc.

Staithes is a lovely fishing village, I would say better than RH Bay tbh. Whitby is lovely too.

None of these places is especially easy by train tho - Scarborough may be your best bet for that.

Whitby has a railway station.

Staithes? You'd be bored by 10 am on Saturday?

Whitby would be ok as there are different places to visit/walk/eat and RHB at a push would be fine too but not Staithes - it's actually quite grim.

Whitby has a station but unless much has changed the trains are infrequent, just go up the Esk Valley and don't run on Sundays.

Thanks All - think we're heading to Whitby! Any recommendations for places to go for afternoon tea?
