Is there ANY way if doing this cheaply without taking time out of school or inviting another family?

Only, book 12 months in advance and a basic cabin.

Check school calendar for polling days and go for weekend 3 nights and days. Still pack lots in if you go for first thing on Friday and stay until last thing Mon.

Go to one of the European ones. School holidays are not always at the same times. Eg in Belgium we don't get a may halfterm - school goes straight through from Easter to June 30th.

I always book in holidays. 12 months in advance and pay a little off each month.

Alternative is to wait till your school has a teacher training day on a Friday or Monday and go that weekend.
