Swimming in Austria - end of May beginning of June too cold?

Looking at booking a week's holiday to Austria this summer. Use of the outdoor swimming pools is a must for entertaining ds (3.10).

There's only a few dates left at our preferred hotel, choice of going last week of May, middle of June or first week in July.

Going earlier will save us quite a bit of money, BUT are the pools likely to be warm enough for DS to use? We can tough it out whenever but he's only skinny & gets cold easily!

Why not book a hotel with an indoor pool then your'e safe either way, loads of Austrian hotels have them.

we have a resort & hotel in mind - stayed there before & its lovely & we really want to go back - but only has outdoor pool. Just up the road is a public pool - has both indoor & outdoor, but the outdoor bit is a large fun pool with kids splash park - which will appeal more to ds than the basic indoor pool.

I take it the outdoor pool is unheated (otherwise why would you be asking)?

What kind of altitude will you be at? Does the pool get direct sunlight for much of the day? Those things make a huge difference to how much you feel the cold water.

I live in central Europe, swim in lakes a lot, and would find an unheated pool at the end of May fairly chilly. The water tends to warm up throughout the summer and is substantially more pleasant by September than in May. Last year we were in the Austrian Alps and swam quite a lot outdoors in unheated pools and lakes, and it was still pretty cold in July (but at 1000 metres), but it was lovely as long as the outside temperature was scorching.

If it is hot outside then it will be fine but you can't guarantee the weather . The later the more chance of warmth but may become stormy.

If you don't have to go during school holiday time I would avoid the last week of May as it will be busy and more expensive.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes pool is unheated. Last weeking in may/first week in june is the week after the school hols so prices not so bad. Think we've decided on going later & taking the risk with the storms. Seem to remember they were mostly in the evening last time so hopefully wouldnt be a problem for us. Thanks again.

Last week in May is the school hold in the UK though.
