Sri Lanka in August?

Anyone know stuff about holidays in Sri Lanka?
We're thinking about staying in an all inclusive resort in the south, wanting beach, pool, activities for children and to experience an unfamiliar culture.
All and any advice welcome...

We took our DDs to Sri Lanka last year , they were 13 and 10. We spent 10 days traveling around the country and then 4 days by the beach at the end. We traveled with Kuoni. We had a wonderful time and I have to say to go there for a beach holiday only would be a waste! There is so much to see, so much culture. Sigiriya Rock temple was astounding, the cave temples at Dumballa, The Temple of the Tooth at Kandy, the tea plantations in the mountains, I will never forget the sights and sounds and aromas of Sri Lanka. A fascinating country. I would say that some of the poverty we saw was heartbreaking and it is quite hard to deal with the 'mobbing' we faced when out and about. The people were friendly and welcoming but we were often overwhelmed by the 'begging' :-( Definately hire a guide if you travel, kuoni organised ours. Traveling around can be difficult the roads are very primitive and an hour journey can take 3 hours. A beautiful place though, unforgettable !

I wouldn't stay in a resort, or go in August (too hot).

August is too hot. I visited in February many years ago. Agree sigiriya rock is amazing, galle is lovely, elephant orphanage was good too and food is excellent. I would book a tour around the country and then have a few days at the beach at the end.
