We have decided we are going for a child-free trip and MIL has agreed to babysit but now I am a bit daunted as I don't really know Italy.

Where is good?? Will need to be nearish to an airport or train link, as peaceful as possible but not dead, need I say good food?

Rome,Rome, Rome!!!
easy to get to from airport and everything is very central!!
Florence is very nice too, (although have only done a day trip there (from rome) and Pisa is very close to Florence for a little trip out. The trains in Italy were great when we went a couple of years ago!!

Ooooh, Florence

Or San Gimignano - it's only small so you wouldn't need a car once there but am not sure about trains to get there, sorry...

Venice also lovely and the majority of tourists would be gone by late Sept, I would imagine.

Am , very.
