Austrian ski resorts for summer similar to Seefeld and Zell Am See?

We have been to Austria for lakes and mountains breaks 4 times now. We have done spring, autumn and winter. We really want to do summer this year. We just came back from a snow (not ski) holiday in Seefeld and it was perfect for us. Very easy transfer (close to innsbruck airport) and had loads to do. Zell am See seems to meet our requirements too but I am a little wary of the distance from the airport. So, can anyone suggest somewhere with these requirements?

  • easyjet must fly to the nearest airport
  • the transfer must not be more thn 25 minute by taxi, or much preferable for us is a train transfer which could be up to an hour (car sick children)
  • must have lake for swimming and boats and mountains with cable cars for going up for views and walks
  • a good public leisure pool and spa type thing
  • a train station in the resort for going to other places

Any thoughts? Seefeld fit this list perfectly in every way but we don't want to go to the same place twice!

That is quie a shopping list!

Have you looked at the area around Landeck?

We stayed in a resort called Serfaus a number of years ago. It is part of a group of ski resorts - Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis - that have specialised in recent years in summer sports. If you want to see some of the things on offer, search for 'Fisser Flitzer' on youtube.

Serfaus is about 15km (I think - we haven't been for a while) from Landeck, which is in the Inn valley and on a direct train line to Innsbruck. In Landeck there are loads of summer sporting activities available. We went rafting through a company called Sport Camp Landeck, which operates a large camping site in the town.

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is on a good ski-lift/cable car network that operates all summer and we used to transport mountain bikes up. There are lots of spa hotels and Wellness centres in the resort, as well as a good public outdoor pool in Serfaus itself. Serfaus has the usual 'family' facilities such as a creche and big mini-golf course. It's not very popular with Brits in the summer and most of the other visitors will be German or Italian. The best English speaker we came across was the Turkish owner of the local kebab shop. How ironic.

I'm not sure if that would be suitable? We loved it there, but haven't been back since we had kids. We always drove, stopping off in Germany on the way there and back. We will definitely return one day.

Saalbach. You would be able to get train to Zell, then a taxi. You get a resort card that gives you free use of almost everything. We stayed at Hotel Bauer, which was all inclusive.

Does it have to be Austria? Because Chamomix would work.

kaumana · 24/01/2014 21:33

Kitzbuhl?

Wiifitmama · 24/01/2014 21:35

Serfaus looks interesting but does not have a lake. We really want a lake for swimming and boating.

Saalbach wouldn't work for us as it is further than Zell am See and Zell is already seeming quite far as it is an hour and 45 min train ride from Salzburg.

Chamois is a no no as we want German speaking. We love Austria and really would like to be there.

Kitzbuhl looks interesting thanks. Need to look at the travel.

Pertisau is beautiful, on a lake, great walking, close to Jenbach station which links directly to Innsbruck. Don't know about easy jet flights though as we got a bus from Munich which was probably a couple of hours. Lots of cable cars, pools, boats across the lake, bike hire etc we had a lovely time a couple of years ago with DC 7 & 5

We have been to both Zell Am See and Seefeld in the Summer. Both beautiful. Zell Am See is about 1 hour away by car. I think the train is about the same. If you can endure the transfer, I would go to Zell Am See. Depending on budget, I would stay at the stadt Wien.

We did a summer holiday in Mayrhofen a few years ago & had a fantastic time. Valley location, mountains either side, largest cable car in Austria, excellent public transport with both a train & bus station & we bought a weekly pass for the lifts & this came with free public transport.
There were some superb walks & we hired bikes & rode the full length of the valley & caught the train back. There's a large reservoir at nearby Gerlos & it is also close to the Hintertux Glacier.

We flew to Salzburg, transfer time was around 2.5hrs but I believe its only around 40mins from Innsbruck, if you can fly there with EasyJet?

Only sticking point is it doesn't have a lake. However it does have a large outdoor public swimming pool, & many of the hotels have pools too. So I guess it depends how important that is for you on your list of criteria. I only mention it as it seems to tick all other boxes & we had such a great time there I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it Smile

The road from Salzburg to Zell is a very good motorway and worth driving. Zell will be a great base to go to Saalbach / Hinterglemm (fabulous outdoor pools) , Saalfelden (amazing summer toboggan) and various other resorts where you can go up the mountains on cablecars / chairlifts and walk around and eat cake. Zell itsellf has a lot to offer not least the lake itself where you can do boat trips etc.

I think you will struggle without a car btw although I empathise with the pukey children

lapsedorienteerer · 03/02/2014 20:18

Have a look at the Salzkammergut area (link wont work) to the East/South East of Salzburg.

We stayed in Kaprun a few years ago. Local passes for buses and cable cars - Zell Am is a short bus ride away and a short bus ride the other way you can go up the Kitzsteinhorn glacier which has a snow park at the top even in the summer. We loved it.

principalitygirl · 04/02/2014 22:07

Another vote for Kaprun. Great outdoor pool there.

Have been to Kitzbuehel in winter only - gorgeous and has an amazing public spa.

If France is an option, Les Deux Alpes is amazing in summer - so much to do including a gorgeous freshwater swimming lake, white water rafting, valley and mountain top walks, great mountain biking for all abilities including downhill, fab lift network running all summer and even summer skiing on the glacier. Think transfer from Grenoble was around an hour by coach.
And Chamonix is top class of course. We've had great summer holidays there.
