Italy in May/June - where should we go/stay/any tips?

hello,

we are thinking of going to Italy in May/June for a few weeks, kids will be 7mths and 2yr10mths! We'd like to either drive or train it & visit, Rome, Pisa, Lake Garda, Florence, ideally staying in cheap and quirky places and then ending up somewhere a bit nicer where we can chill for a week. Any recommendations of where we should go or stay or any tips would be so great please, as we have never been to Italy before.

With kids of those ages I wouldn't chop and change too much to be honest, I would look for somewhere as a base
