Thinking of going to Turkey in April/May, usually go to Canary Islands.

Weather end of April or May will be perfect

Lots to do, fantastic food and very friendly people

I always recommend the Hilton at Dalaman/sarigerme as a family friendly AI resort

Love it!!! Calis Beach in 2012, Kalkan last year. Amazing weather, food, lovely people and fantastic value for money. We will go again this year.

Custardo · 16/01/2014 22:02

i loved it so much i went there twice in one year,

I always book apt and flight seperatley - just got a holiday for 200 quid per person in May

I hate AI, its like butlins in the sun, most people rarely leave the complex and queue up like cattle for food

i can't imagine in any way why that would be fun

isn't eating out, trying different food and restaurants and people - the point , to see, feel, taste the country,

the markets are fabulous - such an experience, great beaches and it is cheap in comparison to the EU

Kalkan - stunning views/friendly people/huge choice if restaurants... Been taking our 5 kids frm when they were small - love it !

Daly an is fB and only 30 mins from the airport. Been three years running.

I love Turkey so much I actually moved out and lived there for 3 years!

Most resorts open up at the beginning of May but some will be open at the end of April so make sure you check that everything is open before you book.

I am with Custardo 100% on the accomodation too. I couldn't bear to be in an AI hotel, not when there is so much to see and do around and when there aer so many wonderful places to go out to eat. We always book flights and then get a villa or apartment.

We usually go to the Bodrum Peninsula but there are so many lovely resorts you have a huge choice. Everywhere is very family oriented, Turkish people love children and will go out of their way to cater for them.

magimedi · 17/01/2014 12:45

Sootica - Where abouts on the Bodrum peninsula do you go? I usually go to the Bozburun peninsula but quite fancy a change. I've done the bit to the East of Dalaman (Fethiye, Kalakn, Kas) but fancy maybe flying into Bodrum or Izmir & going off from there. I like small places, sea swimming (don't need sand) & food - especially lhamajun (sp?) !

magimedi · 17/01/2014 12:46

PS - No kids - just DH & I late 50's & late 60's.

Lighthousekeeping · 17/01/2014 12:51

I usually stay here. It's bloody fantastic. I can't wait until September. www.kilimhotel.com dalyan is brilliant everywhere you go you will hear people saying they're on their 6th, 7th, 8th visit. It just gets under your skin.

One of the best cafés I've been to and beautiful bits for sale www.dalyaniz.com/garden_cafe.php

I think places in Turkey can be very, very different from each other - for example, we stayed in a gorgeous tiny town called Turunc, which was only about 30 mins from Marmaris - but they could not have been more different. Turunc was authentic, quiet and beautiful, Marmaris was full of 18-30 clubs and people harassing you on the street.

I think Turunc has grown since we were there, but still looks gorgeous.

magimedi · 17/01/2014 13:29

And everyone's perception is different. I stayed in Turunc a few years ago & thought it was pretty touristy!

No offence, Diabolo - just how different we all are.

HaveToWearHeels · 17/01/2014 19:48

Loved Turkey so much we bought a place there and go for 3-4 weeks every June. Bodrum peninsula is wonderful but as someone said up thread a lot of resorts don't open up until May, infact where we have an apartment it doesn't really open until June (small resort though). You will get an apartment really cheap. Would never go AI, it is much more fun discovering all the wonderful place to eat.

magimedi · 17/01/2014 19:51

haveto - could you possibly PM me with where this place is? I've been looking at Yalikavak & Ortakent at the moment.

We normally go to the Bozburun peninsula (way beyond Marmaris) but am thinking of going somewhere else in early June.

HaveToWearHeels · 17/01/2014 20:08

Yalikavak is lovely and originally where we wanted to buy but it was too expensive and Ortakent in nice and laid back, infact it is one of our favourite beaches to visit (we hire a car and drive about)

We have an apartment in Torba which is about 10 minutes on the Dolmus from Bodrum, about 30 minutes from the airport. The beach isn't up to much as most of it has been taken over by swanky hotels. I will PM you the details.

diabolo · 18/01/2014 12:02

Turunc may well have changed in the 10 years since I was there.
