Family of 5 to fly to Australia and back - how much?

Not an urgent question, just wondering because some friends have recently moved to Melbourne and I'd really like to get out there for a visit some day!

We'd be going July/August time (tied to UK school holidays, and want a longer trip than we could fit in over the two week Christmas break).

It would probably be summer 2016, so I appreciate anything could happen between then and now to affect prices, but I just wanted to have a rough idea of the cost.

Thanks.

Depending on the airline used anywhere between five and seven thousand pounds for the five of you to fly if all over eleven if younger more the five thousand end . Could get a bargain in sale of flights though so watch out for those . Use to be cheaper to fly on Tuesday / Wednesday but don't know if that's still the case .

remember it won't be summer in Melbourne!!

Thank you. The kids will be 10, 7 and 4. Looks like a good time to go if it gets more expensive when they turn 11!

Yes, I know it won't be summer, but I can't take the kids out of school so to go for a decent length of time means going in our 6 weeks holidays. I think we'll travel around a bit and try and see other parts of the country while we're there.

Thanks for the replies, better get saving (or at least DH had, I don't think we'll be going to Australia on my £40 a week wage!)

We are a family of five and are going next month, 2 children and 1 infant.

Cost us just under five grand for five seats. I think we got a good deal.

actually I struggle to think when Melbourne is pleasant...wouldn't like to be there at the moment!

it would be a great time to go to Northern Australia - reef and maybe rock. Perhaps you could head for there and get the friends to come to you. (I realise that would be a five hour flight for them!)

happy planning, anyway.

We went to Oz with our 3 kids in 2012 and it cost around £5k - however, this included a stop off in Hong kong and then internal flights (we flew in to Cairns, then to Brisbane and later on to Melbourne before flying home). We booked the flights with Trail finders who were brilliant.

Great, thank you for all the advice and ideas :-)
