Can you get late deals during school holidays?

We got married in 2012 but never had a honeymoon as I was expecting dd.

We are hoping to go away this year and leave the DCs with my parents. But DH works away and so we have the choice of Aug or end of Nov/start of Dec.

We were just thinking of getting a late deal somewhere but DH is convinced that you can't get late deals during summer holidays.

Thanks

there are always late deals out there it just depends on how picky you are about where you go and what you do. its also a bit of a lottery as sometimes you get something great but I always remember what a travel agent told me that the last holidays to go are the ones that no one wants and these are the ones that you see as deals. also this year if it is during school hols the Gove changes to taking time out in term time mean a lot of places are booking up much much earlier.

I've worked in travel for 11 years and essentially I'd agree with everything above - the great, independent places book up early and January is the best time to do it because there are early booking discounts and independent travel is cheaper. You get to choose exactly where and when you want to go and specify all the extras that are important to you (do you want somewhere that is dedicated to young families only, a pool, restaurants within walking distance, wifi etc?). When it's booked you can sit back, relax and start planning. Having said that if you really don't care where you go or the standard of the accommodation you will always find something at the last minute - depends how risk averse you are! (Which from personal experience tends to be directly related to how old you are and how many kids you have :) ).

Thomson shops have a 'newspaper' offering deals, we had an 11 night holiday for the price of 7 nights in Puerto Pollensa one year, I think it was July. This wasn't a last minute deal either so we had time between paying the deposit and the balance, and were able to plan. With last minute deals you often have to pay all the money together and there is less choice. OK it was a three * hotel on B&B, but the accommodation was fine; it was on the pedestrian area sea front leading to Pine Walk, and close to all amenities, and we like to eat out anyway.

If you are planning to go without the DCs why not wait until Nov/Dec. That way it's out of school time so you should be able to pick up some great deals then.
