Spain - passport expiry length

Hi, ds is going on a school trip to Spain for a couple of days on 27th march 2014. His passport expires 11th July 2014. I don't want to renew his passport if I don't have to, but remember reading somewhere you need to have time left on passport when you travel. Could anyone help or let me know where to look for this information. Thank you so much.

UK passport holders travelling within EU need validity for proposed itinerary only.

as above. Put it in for renewal when he gets back, they add on the unused time.

That's fantastic thank you both. He's only there for three days. As I won't be there didn't want him to have any problems at the airport. Where did the info come from just so I have it in writing for the school. Thanks again

I wouldnt worry EU nationals are allowed to stay anywhere for any length of time so only needs to be valid for duration of trip. Different if you go to USA etc,

FCO travel advice from the gov.uk page

Are the school really trying to stipulate longer validity? Or are you just fretting in case?
