Last minute winter destination, must be cheap!

Three adults. So far we've looked at Tunisia, Agadir, Tenerife and Benidorm! We aren't necessarily going for a cultural break just something cheap with some sunlight. We've seen loads for about £350 and we can get them even cheaper if we go self catering but I don't know how expensive it is to eat out. We literally just want to sleep eat and read. Any opinions?

Anyone been to Los Christianos?

I was just along from Los Cristianos (Costa Adeje)for 10 days - came home on CHristmas Eve.

Had lovely weather - hot enough to lie out in by day - needed a cotton jumper in the evenings but never wore socks the whole time. I feel SO good for some sunshine.

Eating out is variable in price (& not that great but not dire). Main courses, that included some veg & usually chips were about 10 euros. If you go away from the sea front/pretty view places you can eat a lot cheaper. We had the best curry ever (& in fact ate there 4 times).

Do be careful to book somewhere on the sea/coast side of the mmotorway - or you will have along uphill walk back. Some places run shuttle buses & taxis are not too bad price wise.

Did you hire a villa or book a hotel?

Don't go to Tunisia, I went there last Christmas and it was awful (and cold)

magimedi · 05/01/2014 16:23

We went for a hotel - it was a bit last minute & was our CHristmas, as it were. We did splurge somewhat on the hotel.

If I wanted to go a bit cheaper I would look at a villa/apartment. Loads of supermarkets (including Lidl) with lovely fresh fruit & veg etc. And Wine is cheap & good!

This link will give you a map of the resorts & you will see what I mean about the motorway.

Costa Adeje is slightly quieter than Playa & Los C - but by no means 'dead'.

Out of the main shorthaul options, I would say that the Canary Islands would be your safest bet for a bit of sunshine. It isn't guaranteed to be hot, hot hot, but you should be able to walk around in shorts and t shirt - or with a light cardigan on.

We have been for the past few years in the February half term to various Canary Islands. Mostly it has been nice weather- a little chilly for going in the sea (although, it's a cold in summer too!) We have had trips when the week has been a bit iffy - but we still ended up with a bit of a tan.

If you choose somewhere were there are other activities it won't matter too much if it isn't glorious sunshine every day.

Tenerife and Lanzarote are my favourites for interesting sights to see, and towns and villages to go and visit.

We have done hotels and hiring villas - it all depends what you like. villas win for me - as I am getting more antisocial in my old age.. ha ha.

We can get an apartment in Tenerife between three of us for £300 for a week. Like I said, it's only just been mention so we won't have loads of money. I'm just wondering the cost of living there. We won't be going to Veronica's for ten shots for for five euros!

That sounds a good price.

I don't find it overly expensive on Tenerife. There are some cheapy places, some mid range and a few more pricey places to eat out.

However if you can get to a larger supermarket you can stock up on foods - for most of the week and just eat out a few times.

Lighthousekeeping · 06/01/2014 13:42

Would there be any tapas places around?

Don't go to Tunisia this time of year.
I don't know why it's advertised as a wintersun destination.
It is a lovely place though with some amazing hotels.
The Canaries are your best bet for warm sunshine.
Lanzarote or fuerteventura.
Morocco is also warm at the moment early twenties as is Egypt.

I don't fancy shark. I love morocco but have never been to Agadir us it all hotel based?

I'm also interested in any tips about Morocco.

The only reason I would go to Los Christianos is to get the ferry to Gomera. Amazing island, very green, totally different to GC and Tenerife.
Much more bohemian than the tacky GC/T.

Mind you, I haven't been for years so has probably changed a lot. Wonderful for walking, and on a clear day you can see El Teidi (?), the mountain on Tenerife.

I've heard the other two are nice too, La Palma and Hierro. May be more difficult to get to though, I have no idea.
